Men at Work
I'm currently working on a portrait series of men at work, focusing mostly on tradesmen and artisans. This is split between New York City and small town India -- the justaposition not serving as any specific commentary but merely a side-by-side showcase.
I try hard to keep my presence unnoticed, to capture a natural moment. But it's tough, when I have to walk into a small shoe-store on Lexington Ave. So for a few of these, I asked permission and stood unmoving for many long minutes, hoping to disappear, before shooting.
As we as a society continually shift to office slacks and cubicles, and our outputs become less tangible, the mere physicality and the gestures of these become a small icon of self and resilience.
